Alive Without Breath: Three Dimensional Animals Painted in Layers of Resin by Keng Lye

Singapore-based artist Keng Lye creates near life-like sculptures of animals relying on little but paint, resin and a phenomenal sense of perspective. Lye slowly fills bowls, buckets, and boxes with alternating layers of acrylic paint and resin, creating aquatic animal life that looks so real it could almost pass for a photograph. The artist is using a technique very similar to Japanese painter Riusuke Fukahori who was featured on this blog a little over a year ago, though Lye seems to take things a step further by making his paint creations protrude from the surface, adding another level of dimension to a remarkable medium. Update: I have some additional details from the artist that I’d like to add here, as this post seems to be getting a lot of attention. Via email Lye shares with me:

I started my first series in 2012 where all the  were “flat” and depth was created using the layering of resin and acrylic over the different parts of the illustration. This year, I started on the octopus and it was purely an experiment; I just wanted to see whether I could push this technique to a higher level. After applying acrylic paint straight onto the resin, I incorporated a 3-D element in this instance, it was a small pebble for the ranchu and octopus. For the turtle, I used an egg shell for the turtle shell and acrylic paint for the rest of the finishing. The whole idea here was to give the art work an even more 3D effect therefore you can have a better view from any angle. I think there are still many other techniques to explore.

So to be clear the elements that extrude from the top of the resin are actually physical pieces that have been painted to match the layers of acrylic and resin below.

Venus Noire (Black Venus)*

A woman turned into a sideshow attraction by those who imagine themselves her superiors struggles to maintain her dignity in this drama based on a true story. Sarah “Saartjie” Baartman was born in South Africa but found a certain fame in Europe in the first decades of the 19th century, as she was exhibited like a sideshow attraction by Hendrick Caezar, who billed her as “The Hottentot Venus” and encouraged audiences to view her as part human, part animal. Baartman performed like a trained animal under Caezar’s direction, and sometimes she was required to appear nude before the crowds as spectators were allowed to touch her buttocks and genitals. When reporters condemn Caezar’s exploitation of Baartman, she declares in court that she’s acting of her own free will, but she’s hesitant to explain why she allows herself to be treated so poorly. When Baartman’s partnership with Caezar comes to an end, she finds herself working with a French showman, Reaux, who is even less scrupulous as he parades her before slumming French aristocrats, and later she is at the mercy of Georges Cuvier, a scientist who uses her as part of his vile experiments in hopes of proving Africans are racially inferior. Written and directed Abdellatif Kechiche, Venus Noire received its North American premiere at the 2010 New York Film Festival. via

Their exaggerated dress shake is called a bustle. Like women of today who wear padded underwear and butt implants for non-medical reasons, French women took a stereotypical body feature and tried to pass it on as their own. As the West spread its cultural imperialism, other PoC were exposed to this trend founded in fetishization and copied it. In East Asian  communities, both women and men feel ashamed of their bodies because of this.

Recent incidences mocking the bodies of WoC include Ellen Degeneres dressing up as Sofia Vergara

and Caroline Wozniacki making fun of Serena Williams.

This film helps us understand much of the Western view of bodies of women of color. It stirs a lot of emotions and is admittedly more than I can handle at times. But it’s an important film nonetheless.

I’m actually disgusted. This photo was posted on see more’s facebook page. Now, I don’t remember liking this page, but occasionally it pops up on my newsfeed. Usually its generic “share this guy” posts, but this one caught my attention because of the picture.

I wish I could say that the argument on the left (caused by my outraged comment) is where all the stupidty ends. But it really isn’t, The other comments are DISGUSTING. I actually feel sick to my stomach right now because of them.

I need to add that this is why INTERSECTIONAL feminism is needed, because this wasn’t just a joke about rape (which is awful enough), it was a joke about fat woman, a fat black woman, which one of the commenters had to make note of. There is a special type of stigma for fat Black women, which is a big part of where this type of vitriol is coming from. 

Feminism is not enough if it does not address fat-shaming/fatphobia and racialized misogyny.
